'it' to refer to nothing; everything, something; anything; or even identifying people?

"We use 'it' as an impersonal pronoun to refer to:

  1. Objects, animals, or abstract ideas.
  2. Situations or conditions.
  3. Time, weather, temperature, and distance.
  4. As a placeholder for the subject when using the passive voice or when the real subject appears later in the sentence.

However, 'it' is not typically used to refer to nothing, everything, something, or anything. We have specific pronouns for these concepts. 'It' can be used in identifying people, but this is less common and may sound awkward or impolite in some contexts.

Examples:

  1. I found a book, and it is really interesting. (object)
  2. It is difficult to learn a new language. (situation)
  3. It is 3 o'clock. (time)
  4. It is raining. (weather)

Exercises: Fill in the blanks with 'it' or an appropriate pronoun.

  1. _____ is getting colder outside.
  2. _____ seems like a nice day for a walk.
  3. Can you pass me that pen? _____ is on the table.
  4. _____ takes two hours to drive to the next town.
  5. _____ is hard to believe that they won the game.

Keep in mind that 'it' is generally used for the purposes mentioned above. For nothing, everything, something, and anything, use the respective pronouns 'nothing,' 'everything,' 'something,' and 'anything.'
