Joke of the day

 A: I'm in a big trouble!

A: I'm in a big trouble!
B: Why is that?
A: I saw a mouse in my house!
B: Oh, well, all you need to do is use a trap.
A: I don't have one.
B: Well then, buy one.
A: Can't afford one.
B: I can give you mine if you want.
A: That sounds good.
B: All you need to do is just use some cheese in order to make the mouse come to the trap.
A: I don't have any cheese.
B: Okay then, take a piece of bread and put a bit of oil in it and put it in the trap.
A: I don't have oil.
B: Well, then put only a small piece of bread.
A: I don't have bread.
B: Then what is the mouse doing at your house?!

Joke of the day

A Blonde Bet

A blonde and a redhead met in a bar after work for a drink, and were watching the 6 O'clock news. A man was shown threatening to jump from the Brooklyn Bridge. The blonde bet the redhead $50 that he wouldn't jump, and the redhead replied, "I'll take that bet!"
Anyway, sure enough, he jumped, so the blonde gave the redhead the $50 she owed. The redhead said "I can't take this, you're my friend"
The blonde said "No! A bet's a bet".
So the redhead said "Listen, I have to admit, I saw this on the 5 O'clock news, so I can't take your money"
The blonde replied "well, so did I, but I never thought he'd jump again!"

Grammar explanation

Shpjegimi gramatikor

We can add question tags like isnt it?, can you? or didnt they? to a statement to make it into a question. Question tags are more common in speaking than writing.

We often use question tags when we expect the listener to agree with our statement. In this case, when the statement is positive, we use a negative question tag.

  • Shes a doctor, isnt she?

  • Yesterday was so much fun, wasnt it?

If the statement is negative, we use a positive question tag.

  • He isnt here, is he?

  • The trains are never on time, are they?

  • Nobody has called for me, have they?

If we are sure or almost sure that the listener will confirm that our statement is correct, we say the question tag with a falling intonation. If we are a bit less sure, we say the question tag with a rising intonation.

Formation

If there is an auxiliary verb in the statement, we use it to form the question tag.

  • I dont need to finish this today, do I?

  • James is working on that, isnt he?

  • Your parents have retired, havent they?

  • The phone didnt ring, did it?

  • It was raining that day, wasnt it?

  • Your mum hadnt met him before, had she?

Sometimes there is no auxiliary verb already in the statement. For example, when:

Ndonjëherë nuk ndodhet asnjë folje ndihmëse tashmë deklaratë. Për shembull, kur:

  • ... the verb in the statement is present simple or past simple and is positive. Here we use dont, doesnt or didnt:

  • Jenni eats cheese, doesnt she?

  • I said that already, didnt I

  • ... the verb in the statement is to be in the present simple or past simple. In this case we use to be to make the question tag:

  • The bus stops over there, isnt it?

  • None of those customers were happy, were they?

  • ... the verb in the statement is a modal verb. Here we use the modal verb to make the question tag:

  • They could hear me, couldnt they?

  • You wont tell anyone, will you?

If the main verb or auxiliary verb in the statement is am, the positive question tag is am I? but the negative question tag is usually arent I?:

  • Im never on time, am I?

  • Im going to get an email with the details, arent I?
