Idiom of the day

 "Barking up the wrong tree" means pursuing a mistaken or misguided course of action or blaming the wrong person for something.

Example:

Imagine a teacher notices a student’s homework is missing. She immediately accuses John of not doing it because he often forgets his assignments. However, later, she realizes that John had actually submitted his homework on time, but it got misplaced. In this case, the teacher was barking up the wrong tree by blaming John when he wasn’t at fault.
