9/12 Easily confused words

Amount vs. Number

  • Amount is used for uncountable nouns (things that cannot be counted individually).
    • Example: A large amount of sugar was spilled on the floor.
  • Number is used for countable nouns (things that can be counted).
    • Example: A large number of students attended the lecture.

Tip: If you can count the items individually, use number. If not, use amount.
