English in practice

"Appraise" and "Apprise" sound similar but have different meanings:

  1. Appraise – means to assess, evaluate, or estimate the value, quality, or condition of something.

    • Example: The jeweler appraised the diamond at $5,000.
    • Example: The manager appraised the employee's performance before giving a raise.
  2. Apprise – means to inform or notify someone about something.

    • Example: Please apprise me of any changes to the schedule.
    • Example: She apprised her boss of the project's progress.

A simple way to remember:

  • Appraise = Assess
  • Apprise = Inform
