 39. Comparatives and superlatives 

The comparative (e.g. taller, sharper, stronger, heavier, shorter etc.) is used to compare one person or thing with another person or thing.

 • John is taller than Peter.

 • Alice is cleverer than Mary. 

The superlative (e.g. tallest, sharpest, strongest, heaviest, shortest etc.) is used to compare somebody or something with the whole group to which she/he/it belongs. 

• John is the tallest boy in the class. 

• Alice is the prettiest of the four girls. 

• He is the best player in the team. 

When a group has only two members, we prefer the comparative to the superlative. 

• Incorrect: Take the shortest of the two routes. 

• Correct: Take the shorter of the two routes. 

• Incorrect: She is the prettiest of the two sisters. 

• Correct: She is the prettier of the two sisters.

39. Shkalla krahasore dhe shkalla sipërore

Shkalla krahasore (p.sh. taller, sharper, stronger, heavier, shorter etj.) përdoret për të krahasuar një person ose një gjë me një person ose gjë tjetër.

• John is taller than Peter.
John është më i gjatë se Peter.

• Alice is cleverer than Mary.
Alice është më e zgjuar se Mary.

Shkalla sipërore (p.sh. tallest, sharpest, strongest, heaviest, shortest etj.) përdoret për të krahasuar një person ose një gjë me të gjithë grupin ku ai/ajo bën pjesë.

• John is the tallest boy in the class.
John është djali më i gjatë në klasë.

• Alice is the prettiest of the four girls.
Alice është më e bukura nga katër vajzat.

• He is the best player in the team.
Ai është lojtari më i mirë në ekip.

Kur një grup ka vetëm dy anëtarë, zakonisht përdorim shkallën krahasore, jo atë sipërore.

• Incorrect: Take the shortest of the two routes.
Gabim: Merr rrugën më të shkurtër nga të dyja rrugët.

• Correct: Take the shorter of the two routes.
Saktë: Merr rrugën më të shkurtër nga të dyja (krahasuar mes tyre).

• Incorrect: She is the prettiest of the two sisters.
Gabim: Ajo është më e bukura nga dy motrat.

• Correct: She is the prettier of the two sisters.
Saktë: Ajo është më e bukur nga dy motrat.
