Correct these five mistakes

5 Grammar mistakes not to be done

Following you will see five different sentences. Each sentence has a mistake.

Try to identify each mistake. They are all grammar mistakes and it’s your job to find them all and fix them.

Think what the mistake might be.

Find the mistake.

1)    I suggested him to buy the other one. ( Where is the mistake here?)

2)    I suggest you to do it .

3)    I suggest you don’t be late anymore.

4)    I am looking for a two bedrooms apartment.

5)    I have a six years old son

1)    In the first sentence it is incorrect to say“I suggested him”

There are three different options to correct it

a)     I suggest that he buy the other one

b)    I suggest he buy the other one.

c)     Gerund: I suggested buying the other one. “ suggest + ing “

eg. I suggested buying/ going there/ doing.  Make sure you use a gerund after that verb

2)    We do not say: “ I suggest you.”

We can add ”that”“ I suggest that you do it or I suggest ,you do it.”

Do not say I suggest you.

This verb is very confusing and it is used differently from all other verbs. That is why we sometimes make mistakes.

We can also say: “ I suggest it to you.” “To suggest smth to someone”

Do not say: “ I suggest you this one.” Say :” I suggest this one to you.”

Don’t use “to” after suggest. Instead use the word “that”.

“ I suggest that you fix it soon.” “ I suggest that he fix it soon.”

If you carefully see the way I say my sentence “ he fix” and “ he fixes”. That is because the verb which is used after “suggest”, must take a subjunctive verb after it, an infinitive, and the subjunctive form is the infinitive form ( no past tense, no”s” ending )

You can not use the past tense or you can not add an -s; so we say “ I suggest that he go there.” Not that he goes there. “ I suggest that he be there on time.”( not that he is );”I suggest that he try harder next time.” Not “tries.”

3)    Where is the mistake in sentence three?

We do not say: “ I suggest you don’t be late any more.” We say: “ I suggest you not be late any ore.” Or “ I suggest not being late any more.” “ I suggest not driving so fast.” “I suggest not doing that.”

4)    Let’s look at sentence No.4. The mistake here is on letter ‘s’ on the word bedroom. It should be “ two bedroom-apartment.” We can say :” My apartment has two bedrooms.”  Or “ I have a two bedroom apartment. “ My car has four doors.” Or “ I have a four door car.” ‘ The meeting lasted 30 minutes.”  “ It was a 30 minute meeting.”

5)    The same goes for question number 5.

Not: “ I have a six years old son. ”But:  “ I have a six year old son.” “ I have an eighty year old grandfather.”
