Lesson 78

Have you ever heard the word deduction?

Here is the meaning:" the process of reaching a decision or answer by thinking about the known facts, or the decision that is reached."

Through a process of deduction, the detectives discovered the identityof the killer.All we can do is make deductions from the available facts.

We can use ‘can’t’ for deduction. The opposite of ‘can’t’ in this context is ‘must’.
  • You can’t be hungry. You’ve just eaten.
  • You must be hungry. You haven’t eaten anything all day.;
  • He was in London one hour ago when I spoke to him. He can’t be here yet.
