Verbs followed by ‘-ing’ or by ‘to’ + infinitive

     Do you know when to use -ing and when to use to + infinitive after a verb? Look at these examples to see how the verb forms are used.

Grammar explanation 

Shpjegimi gramatikor 

     A verb can be followed by another verb. The second one usually needs to change into the -ing form or the to + infinitive form. Which form you need depends on what the first verb is. 

     Një folje mund të ndiqet nga një folje tjetërFolja e dytë zakonisht ka nevojë të ndryshojë në formën -ing apo në formën të + paskajore. Forma që ju nevojitet varet se cila është folja e parë. 

 

 

Verbs followed by the -ing form 

Foljet e ndjekura nga forma -ing 

     When enjoy, admit and mind are followed by another verb, it must be in the -ing form. 

     Kur foljet shijojpranoj dhe ‘nuk kam problem të…’ janë të ndjekura nga një folje tjetër, ajo duhet të jetë në formën -ing. 

  • enjoy travelling. 

  • He admitted stealing the necklace. 

  • dont mind waiting if youre busy. 

 

     Other verbs in this group include avoid, cant help, consider, dislike, feel like, finish, give up, miss, practise and suggest. Like and love can be followed by the -ing form and the to + infinitive form. They are both correct. 

     Folje të tjera në këtë grup përfshijnë foljet shmang, ‘nuk jam në gjendje të’, konsiderojnuk pëlqej, pëlqej, mbarojheq dorëmungojpraktikoj dhe sugjerojPëlqej dhe dua mund të ndiqen nga forma -ing dhe forma të + paskajoreTë dyja janë të sakta. 

 

 

Verbs followed by to + infinitive form 

Foljet e ndjekura nga forma të + paskajore 

     When want, learn and offer are followed by another verb, it must be in the to + infinitive form. 

     Kur duamësoj dhe ofroj janë të ndjekura nga një folje tjetër, ajo duhet të jetë në formën të + paskajore. 

  • want to speak to the manager. 

  • Shelearning to play the piano. 

  • He offered to help us wash up. 

 

     Other verbs in this group include afford, agree, ask, choose, decide, expect, hope, plan, prepare, promise, refuse and would like. 

     Folje të tjera në këtë grup përfshijnë përballojpranojpyeszgjedhvendospresshpresojplanifikojpërgatitpremtojrefuzoj dhe do të pëlqeja.
