32. Don’t use the with a superlative when you are not comparing one person or thing with another.

Compare:

  • She’s the nicest of the three teachers.
  • She’s nicest when she’s working with small children.
  • This is the best wine I’ve got.
  • This wine is best when it’s three or four years old.
