Grammar in practice

 Affect vs effect

Affect means to influence or to change in some measure.

An effect is a result, consequence, or out come.

  • Affect is generally used as a verb meaning "to influence."
  • Effect is most often a noun meaning "the result."

Example Sentences:

  1. The sudden change in weather affected the outdoor event.
  2. The effect of the sudden change in weather was that the event had to be moved indoors.

"affect" is what you do (the action), and "effect" is what happens (the result).
